The special session will take place on 23 October 2026 in Cluj-Napoca, as an official event of the European AI Innovation Month 2026.
The session is organized within the 2026 IEEE 22nd International Conference on Intelligent Computer Communication and Processing - ICCP 2026, which will be held between 22 and 24 October 2026 in Cluj-Napoca.
It aims to bring together researchers, engineers and practitioners exploring how advanced AI methods can support smarter, more resilient and sustainable energy systems across power grids, energy markets and renewable energy integration.
Topics covered by the session include:
- Large language models and foundation models for future smart grids;
- Distributed renewable energy forecasting and optimization;
- AI-driven orchestration of energy services;
- Flexibility management in smart buildings and microgrids;
- Prosumers and decentralized energy markets;
- Digital twins for distributed energy resources;
- AI for energy-system resilience and cybersecurity;
- AI-supported energy communities and local energy systems.
Connections with European research initiatives
The special session is closely connected to research activities developed through European initiatives and projects focusing on AI for energy systems, energy data spaces, digital twins and AI Factories.
Projects associated with the session include HEDGE-IoT, EnerTEF, PVSmile, Solar-Move and RO AI Factory. The session is also aligned with the activities of the Smart Energy Cluster, which brings together academic, industrial and innovation stakeholders working on the digital transformation of the energy sector.
Through these connections, the session aims to strengthen interdisciplinary collaboration and facilitate exchanges between AI researchers, energy-system specialists and technology developers working on real-world applications.

Call for contributions
Researchers and professionals from academia and industry are invited to submit papers presenting original research, technological developments, applied solutions and interdisciplinary perspectives on the use of artificial intelligence in future energy systems.
Important dates include:
- Paper submission deadline: 25 July 2026;
- Notification of acceptance: 8 September 2026;
- Camera-ready submission: 22 September 2026;
- Conference dates: 22 - 24 October 2026.
Papers should be submitted through the ICCP 2026 submission system, specifying the special session title “AI for the Future Energy System.”
