AIRI@UTCN welcomed a working visit from Tenaris focused on Discovery Sprints on AI. Tenaris representatives included Vincenzo Manzoni, leading AI execution at Tenaris across industrial and business processes, Senior Director, Data Science at Tenaris, and Adjunct Professor at the University of Bergamo, and Davide Poletti, Senior Director, Data Science at Tenaris, astrophysicist and former researcher at the University of Milan, currently working on modelling and optimization.
The programme included an institutional meeting with Prof. Vasile Țopa, Rector of the Technical University of Cluj-Napoca. Tenaris representatives also met with Prof. Florin Oniga, Vice-Rector for Research, and Robert Varga, researcher, for discussions focused on computer vision.
Throughout their visit, Vincenzo Manzoni and Davide Poletti were accompanied by Prof. Adrian Groza, Vice-Rector for IT Infrastructure and Digitalization, who introduced them to several UTCN research groups, laboratories, and areas of expertise.
A central part of the visit was the Discovery Sprints on AI session, hosted at HUB UT, Barițiu 26-28, which brought together researchers working across diverse and complementary fields. The programme included contributions from Raluca Portase, representing the Knowledge Engineering Group, Prof. Rodica Potolea, Director of the Computer Science Department, Aurelia Ciupe, Head of the Center for Immersive Technologies in Education, Tudor Cioara from the Distributed Systems Research Laboratory (DSRL), and Radu Slavescu from the Intelligent Systems Group.
The visit also included exchanges with Stelian Brad on digital twins, Cătălin Popa on materials, and Cristian Dudescu on experimental mechanics, reflecting the diversity of UTCN’s research ecosystem and the broad potential for applied AI collaboration across engineering domains.
These meetings created a valuable framework for connecting TUCN’s academic and research expertise with Tenaris’ industrial perspectives on AI implementation, modelling, optimization, computer vision, digital twins, advanced materials, and experimental mechanics.
Through this visit, AIRi@UTCN continues to support dialogue between academia and industry and to foster new opportunities for applied artificial intelligence research with technological, industrial, and societal relevance.
