Visiting

Benoit Challand is a French artist living and working in Lyon, France. Trained at Bellecour Art School in Lyon, he began his artistic career in 2009 and has since developed a practice situated at the intersection of digital art, sculpture, 3D modelling, and emerging technologies.

Moving between the physical and the virtual, Challand uses 3D modelling, digital sculpture, and additive fabrication to create forms that translate invisible states into tangible material expressions. His artistic practice investigates the porous boundaries between pixel and particle, image and object, algorithm and matter.

At AIRi@UTCN, Benoit Challand joins the research community and is working around the project “Crystallize”, an artistic and technological exploration of how emotions can be translated into data, images, and sculptural forms.

His stay at AIRi@UTCN will offer an opportunity to connect artistic and research perspectives, investigating how the core emotions structuring his artistic practice can become training data for an AI model capable of regenerating images from EEG signals. These AI-generated images are then translated into new sculptural forms and installations, creating a dialogue between artistic intuition, artificial intelligence, neuroscience, and material experimentation.

Benoit Challand’s works have appeared in Wired, The Times, Art Travel, Le Monde, Elle, and IDN, and have been presented in venues including the Musée des Archives nationales and the Musée des Arts décoratifs in Paris. Read more.
