About
The mission of the EUt+ Research Group on Data Science is to build a collaborative, interdisciplinary, and internationally connected research community that advances fundamental and applied AI research, strengthens cooperation among EUt+ member universities, and develops trustworthy, scalable, and sustainable AI solutions to address major scientific, societal, and industrial challenges. By combining expertise in AI methodologies, distributed and intelligent computing systems, real-world applications, and responsible AI governance, the group aims to establish shared research priorities, and translate research outcomes into impactful innovations. A core commitment is to empower students and early-career researchers through active participation in joint projects, international networks, and collaborative knowledge creation. The group's research activities address a broad and interconnected range of themes, including machine learning, optimization, natural language processing, computer vision, multimodal learning, explainable AI, and large-scale models. It also explores distributed and federated learning, edge AI, on-device intelligence, cloud–edge orchestration, resource allocation, large-scale model serving, multi-agent systems, swarm intelligence, and secure distributed AI. These research directions are supported by a shared focus on AI infrastructure and computing resources, including GPU clusters and advanced research infrastructure, enabling experimentation, scalable model development, and the deployment of intelligent systems. An important dimension of the group is the application of AI to real-world challenges through collaborative, project-based research. Priority application areas include healthcare, smart infrastructure, energy systems, and Industry 4.0, encouraging interdisciplinary cooperation and the integration of technological expertise with sector-specific knowledge. Projects are designed to promote meaningful collaboration between at least two EUt+ member universities, with opportunities to involve additional European universities, research institutions, and external partners. As a flexible platform for international research cooperation, the EUt+ Research Group will support the development of joint research initiatives, competitive funding proposals, collaborative publications, and long-term partnerships. It will actively encourage the participation of students and early-career researchers, providing opportunities for knowledge exchange, interdisciplinary training, and integration into international research networks. Through this collaborative approach, the group aims to strengthen the EUt+ research ecosystem, build shared scientific capacity, and contribute to the development of innovative AI solutions for Europe's digital and societal transformation.
