Abstract
Orange initiative, in collaboration with the local technical universities and industry partners, aimed at supporting researchers, startups, and companies in pre-testing their 5G-based solutions through two laboratories located in Bucharest, Iași and one to be launched soon in Cluj-Napoca. The Orange 5G Labs include technologies that will be available in the commercial network in the future, but in the present can only be tested in a sandbox environment. The Labs architecture is based on a private 5G Standalone (SA) network with radio access nodes distributed in partner technical universities and extended in key areas for experimentation. The 5G network is linked with a state-of-the-art transport network and edge computing facility to host the most demanding use cases. Moreover, the Labs offer access to a wide range of 5G and IoT end-user devices, allowing for prototyping and testing in diverse conditions. The Cluj-Napoca 5G Lab will be a joint venture with a local industry leader, AROBS Transilvania Software. The main focus of the laboratory will be on dual-use applications targeting the usage of telco infrastructures for both commercial and defense use cases, including Integrated Sensing and Communications (ISAC) and Quantum-ready cybersecurity solutions (e.g. PQC, QKD). Moreover, the Cluj-Napoca 5G Lab will also investigate the integration of AI-enabled technologies in radio, networking and computing architectures.
